Congratulations to the educators who recently earned graduate course credit through the partnership between Bridgewater State University and NGPF that builds on NGPF's summer FinCamps, a collaborative one-day in person PD experience. Read on to learn more about the program and keep the opportunity in mind for next summer.
Taught by Dr. Travis Towne and Z Zinter, these graduate courses help educators build on their NGPF FinCamp experiences, explore relevant financial literacy topics, collaborate with colleagues, and create practical resources for their students.
The program began two years ago with EDHM 541: Financial Literacy for Educators and has continued to grow. EDHM 542: Applied Financial Literacy for Educators was added last year to help educators apply their learning in new ways, and this year the series culminated with at third course, EDHM 543: Advancing Financial Literacy for Educators.
As one participant shared: “The course was GREAT. I loved how practical it was and how it supported the content from the Virtual PD and FinCamps.”
EDHM 541 helps participants explore current trends, instructional tools, and emerging technology. EDHM 542 challenges them to apply financial literacy through connections to civic literacy, behavioral economics, entrepreneurship, career readiness, and technology.
What makes these courses a game changer is their immediate impact. Participants leave with new knowledge, fresh ideas, and classroom-ready materials tailored to their students and teaching environments.
“This course makes you think in new ways and teaches you new ways to bring personal finance content to your students,” said another participant.
EDHM 543 takes the next step by helping educators move from classroom practice to leadership and advocacy. Through a capstone project, participants develop financial literacy initiatives designed to meet needs within their schools and communities.
This culminating course also honors the legacy of Joey Running, who helped with the initial development of the course alongside Travis and Z. Joey unexpectedly passed away last year, but her dedication to advocating for financial literacy education continues through the work of the educators participating in EDHM 543.
These courses reflect an idea that Joey championed: financial literacy educators can be more than effective classroom teachers. They can also be advocates, innovators, collaborators, and leaders who create lasting change.
Again, congratulations to all of the educators who have completed the EDHM courses for investing in their professional growth and their students’ financial futures.
